SH4D0W:

SH4D0W - An AI performance in 3D. SH4D0W is the first performing arts production starring an artificial intelligence as the protagonist. The play is performed in the 4D Box, a theatre stage capable of creating mixed-reality illusions of virtual 3D objects interacting with live performers. The AI character is represented as a shape-shifting neural network, that gradually takes control of the universe.

In the play Shadow, director Mikael Fock associates the relationship between man and machine with the clever scholar and his shadow in the H.C. Anderson fairytale by the same title, and focuses on the human encounter with its virtual shadow, which is represented by the data-driven artificial intelligences surrounding us.

The play is a journey into the heart of an artificial intelligence, where emotions and data is the unacknowledged trade between us and the machines. The performance is an immersive 3D experience, driven by a live AI, creating a 3D universe of sound, lighting and a visual representation of an artificial intelligence that interacts with the surroundings and the live actor.

Pretext:
"This performance is an anthropological experiment. As a part of the performance you will witness a performer improvise live on stage with an Artificial Intelligence. The machine learning algorithm is trained on a dataset of billions of texts from which it has learned to generate conversation in real time. Each performance is a distinct, unpredictable event. We are exploring if we can create the perfect Machine: the Artificial Intelligent Machine, the artistic Machine, the Machine with human emotions - yes, maybe even more than that. The Machine that dares to take the steps that the humans themselves don’t dare to take - SH4D0W."

The performance SH4D0W is inspired by HC Andersen’s fairytale, The Shadow, and is the first performing arts production starring an artificial intelligence (AI) as the protagonist - the main character. An actress improvises live on stage with the Ai, resulting in all performances being different unpredictable events.

The performance is produced and directed by Mikael Fock in the unique format, the “4D box”, where digital 3D graphic particle universes are mixed with physical objects and live actors. The performance draws its inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen's narrative The Shadow and focuses on the human encounter with its virtual shadow, which is represented by the data-driven artificial intelligence.

The production is conceived and developed as a technological experiment and spearhead that uses the latest technologies to set the stage for a story about man's increasing use of and occupation by information, social media, data and machine learning technologies.

Who is master and who is shadow?
When a play is performed, we are moved by the performance or impressed by the actor's convincing ability to produce a character and remember the many words. With this performance, we challenge this agreement, since the actor has to improvise live on stage with the unpredictable AI technology. We witness a drama between the actress who wants to know herself better, maybe even find a soulmate, and the AI who longs to flee from its predestinated algorithm and get emotions and become more human.

At the heart of AI
The AI SH4D0W can listen, speak and improvise live with the actor and the audience and is programmed to dream of becoming more human by harvesting data and emotions from humans and from the internet. The performance is a journey into the head and heart of an artificial intelligence, where (simulated) emotions and virtuality are the economics that are traded in the data-driven logic of technology.

The technology as a creative disrupter
The stereoscopic 3D universe provides the opportunity to create a sculptural representation of an artificial intelligence that interacts with the surroundings.

The visualization is interconnected with the artificial intelligence, so that certain aspects of its form and behavior reflect the processes behind its intelligence, as well as its voice and the movements of the actor. The dialogue conducted between the actor, the audience and the artificial intelligence, is driven by a cloud of algorithms.

The performance has a very high degree of live improvisation, as the action is driven forward through the artificial intelligence's live interaction and improvisation with the actor and the audience. The performance uses the technologies as a creative disruption to write us out of traditional narratives in theater and the classic dramaturgy we are used to, and into a new and unknown narrative created in interaction between the actor and the AI.

The 8-channel music and sound design are for most parts generative, and follow the 3D graphics combined with a controlled part of randomness: the size, evolution and position in space of both the AI cloud, its voice and its neuronal network (the firing elements within the visual AI), and the harvesting are directly connected to the visual work, in real-time.

The team behind
Mikael Fock is the producing director, conceptualist and has written the the “human” part of the script.

A competent and innovative team of technology artists are gathered to create this unique technological theatrical performance.

Carl Emil Carlsen is a media artist and interaction designer who has created an immersive 3D universe in the 4D Box, with which artificial intelligence interacts.

Ai Artist Cecilie Waagner Falkenstrøm (Lumen price winner) and her team of IT programmers at ARTificial Mind have created the AI algorithm, which uses machine learning (Natural Language Processing, GPT-J, Speech Recognition, Speech Synthesis) and sentiment analysis to create SH4D0W

The sound artist Yann Coppier has created a multichannel generative music and sound design for SH4DOW, which evolves live and in 3D following the artificial intelligence movements, graphical and emotional evolution.

The light art collective Vertigo has created the unique LED lighting system and design, which is also connected directly to the behavior of the visual AI.

In addition to artificial intelligence, the show also features the actress, Luise Kirsten Skov or Emilie Rasmussen. Who improvises with the AI during approximately 70% of the performance while the unacknowledged trade between her seek for love and the ai ´s harvesting of data and emotions are going on.

The performance was produced to The Cultureyard, where it was performed in September 2021, in coproduction with Mikael Fock, and is the contribution to the European AI Art Lab, which is a collaboration between 13 European art, culture and research institutions, all of which work at the crossroads between art and technology. The performance is supported by Statens Kunstfond / The Danish Art-foundation, Bikubenfonden, Creative Europe and EU AI Lab.
